For the past year I’ve been honing my sharpening skills ( no pun intended ) cause I needed to keep my edc blade and knives in good shape and lately I’ve become good at it, and finally when I’m done sharpening they are hair shaving ready but I took me a lot of Utube videos tutorials and getting the right stuff to get me where I’m at now, so definitely this strop is one reason why I can get the good results I’m getting now. By no means I’m not an expert in strops but this one here seems just fine to me and does what it is supposed to do. I do from time to time put some honing oil on it to keep things smoother. I use the course side of the hide first for a few passes the I finish up on the fine side.

I work as a prep cook in a Japanese restaurant and I use this leather/suede strop to maintain our restaurant’s 12 knives of various edge grinds (both asymmetrical, symmetrical, and convex-, concave- and wedge-type edge profiles). First, I use the darker side (rough suede) to conduct a preliminary cleaning/stropping of each knife (20x laps per 1.5″ of each blade along the length, from heel to tip); then, I use the lighter side (smooth leather) to do a fine stropping of the blade to hone it to a keen edge (15x laps per 1.5″ of each blade along the length, from heel to tip). I do this each night for 6x nights a week to maintain the edges of our knives (garasuki, honesuki, santoku, gyuto, cleavers and French-style kitchen knives) as long as possible before we have to use whetstones to re-grind and actually sharpen the edges.I’m quite happy with this product when I purchased only one (1x) instance of it in MAR 2017: the construction and fit-and-finish was quite good, and it seemed to be made in USA. The handle was comfortable to hold because the filling/padding of the handle was solid yet still soft to the touch. Overall construction and stitching seemed decent and durable (like in the current picture). However, when I recently purchased the 3-pack version a few months later in JUN 2017 (I’m teaching my kitchen staff how to strop/hone their own blades, so we need more strops), the quality of each strop was decidedly less so: each strop is shorter by 0.50″; the stitching seems less robust; the end-wrapping material is thinner and the cuts/edges are misaligned with the stitches; the handle is made of thinner synthetic material without any padding/stuffing.But despite all that, I was able to use one (1x) of these new strops to successfully service all 12 knives in one night, so perhaps my complaints about the new 3-pack are about merely cosmetic aspects.Nonetheless, this 5-star review is for the single-instance purchase of this product; if the seller could guarantee the better quality of this product similar to the one I received in MAR 2017, then I would definitely purchase it again.

I never imagined how useful this would be. I usually use a harbor freight 1×30 belt grinder to sharpen. I had no idea how effective this could be. I worked green buffing compound into the leather on the ruff side with a heat gun and mink oil. You really do not need the heat gun. I also worked some mink oil into the smooth side. I will order a couple more in the near future. This is a great value. I hold the strop tight for knives with an angled grind and I hold it a little slack for convex grinds.

If you think you’re going to strop your Ninja Mall Warrior swords, this strop is not for you. If you want to put a nice razor edge on knifes up to about 5 inches long (Longer once you’ve developed the technique) then this is an excellent choice. The actual working surface is 2 inches by 16 inches and is well made using very good materials. Some reviews state that it has a bent nail for a hook and that is true, however it is an 18d nail and is chromed and well shaped and much stronger than you may have been lead to believe. As a long time sharpener and collector of knives (over 60 years) I can say that this is a bargain for the price and when used properly and taken care of, will last just as long as strops costing 6 times as much, you just don’t have as large a surface. What I do recommend is that you purchase an old leather belt to use with your polishing compound and then use your strop for the final cleaning and finished edge. After using the belt, I use the back (dark, rough side) of the strop to actually clean the blade and then use the lighter smooth side for final touch up. Woodstock D 2901 extra fine is a great compound to use. I also recomment you watch some Youtube videos and get a little practice in on an old cheap knife. You’ll quickly get the hang of it and develope a little muscle memory in short order and sharpen your knives like the pros. Store your strop indoors in a cool dry place. Yep, I recommend it!

I ordered this to use to strop my knives with. The product that I received came to me rolled in a coil and it arrived without any flaws or issues in the leather surface. The length of the strop is 20 inches from the top of the leather to the end of the leather handle. One side of the strop is very light tanned leather and I will leave it that way as I already have a stropping board I made and one of the areas is coated with buffing compound. I will use this leather strop as a cleaning strop for the blades of my knife and the light tan side for the final polishing side of the strop. I use the suede side of the strop to clean my knife blades before the final stropping. The strop did not come with an eyelet ring but it has a looped hook for hanging and to be honest I like the hook I got better. The strop is 2 inches wide and I have no issues stropping my knives including my Spyderco Manix 2 Xl with a 3.88 long blade. The quality of the strop is excellent for the price and it works well. After a few minutes of work with my stropping tools my knives are razor sharp. I liked the strop so much I purchased another one for my son as a gift. This is a good product and I rated it 5 stars. It is good quality, it was delivered sooner than expected and the price is reasonable
