Now that we’re into the warmest portion of the summer…

…we could all use a cool cocktail to help us get through the heat. The Chilton drink is a refreshing summer drink that is simple, elegant, and delightful. Furthermore, it is commonly assumed that this drink originated in Lubbock, Texas.

What Is a Chilton Drink?

The chilton drink is Lubbock’s signature beverage, made with vodka, lemon, and soda. Not to mention the salted rim. It’s optional, but strongly encouraged, just like a margarita. While the drink’s exact origins are unknown, residents believe it began in a Lubbock-area country club.

History of The Chilton

Dr. Chilton allegedly went to the Lubbock Country Club many years ago and ordered the bartender to squeeze two lemons into a shot of vodka, rim the glass with salt, and top it off with club soda and a lemon garnish. A simple request that may have resulted in the creation of this iconic drink. Unfortunately, there is no definite record of whether Dr. Chilton is a real person or a fictional figure. But one thing is certain: the Chilton is a beautiful and refreshing beverage that is simple to make and much simpler to enjoy.

The Chilton is zesty, effervescent, and refreshing, with only three essential ingredients. To balance out the lemon and soda water, the salted rim adds a pleasant kick. It tastes like a lemon-flavored sparkling water, but with a kick from the vodka.

Making a Chilton Drink at Home

It is simple to make a Chilton at home. The fact that you probably already have the majority of the components on hand is a sign of an excellent cocktail. Here’s what you’ll require:

  • 2 oz of vodka
  • Club soda and two lemons
  • kosher salt
  • Optional garnish: a slice of lemon

Step 1: Get the Glass Ready

The Chilton is traditionally served in a Collins glass, but you may use whatever glassware you have on hand if you don’t have Collins-style glassware. Begin by rimming the glass with salt, like you would for a margarita. Swipe a lemon slice along the rim before rolling it in coarse salt. Then, fill the glass to the brim with ice.

Step 2: Pour in the vodka and lemon juice.

Then, pour in two ounces of vodka into the glass. Here, select a nice vodka. With only a few components in the Chilton, the vodka’s excellence will shine out. Then, squeeze in the juice of two lemons. You must use fresh lemon juice in this recipe. It gives this simple mixed drink the bright, refreshing flavor you need after a long day in the blazing heat. Finally, fill the glass halfway with club soda.

Step 3: Combine All of The Ingredients, Garnish and Serve.

Grab a cocktail spoon and mix your Chilton to incorporate all of the ingredients in the glass. Serve with a lemon slice as a garnish. The Chilton, unlike many fruity beverages, is not excessively sugary. It’s tangy, cold, and refreshing, and it’s a necessity on a hot day in Texas or wherever you live.
