However, in my opinion, the French press coffee…

…is the most accessible “good” cup of coffee.

A french press coffee is one of the cheapest coffee makers on the market…

…and I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad cup of coffee from one. S

o, here’s my guide to “how to make french press coffee.”..

Make sure you choose the best coffee for you french press…

Keep reading if you are interested!

There are numerous instructions on how to use a french press coffee…

…properly available online. A timer and a scale are required…

…for many of the guides. My approach is a little more approachable…

…and less technical. A little experimenting is always a part…

…of the process for any cooking or baking I do.

I’ve put together a handy list of everything you’ll need…

…to make a fantastic cup of coffee with a french press.

You don’t need all of these things, but many of them are extremely useful…

The only thing on the list that you absolutely must have is a french press coffee….

All of the other items can be substituted.

Let’s hear Irene’s story…

I married a man who has this eerily amazing habit of bringing me coffee in bed…

His brewing method of choice is the French press, and he won me over…

It’s not just having coffee in bed that has turned me into a devotee of French press..

,,(although of course that helps). Turns out that my method had been missing…

one key element all those years: The right grinder.

A French press is easier to use, clean, and store than any drip coffee maker. It doesn’t take up too much space in your kitchen so you still have plenty of counter space.

Here we go!

Start by Grinding Your Coffee

Grist step to make french press coffee is to grind your coffee…

I start with whole beans every time. Once the beans are ground..

I believe the flavor of the coffee begins to change immediately…

If you grind your beans right before brewing them…

…your coffee will taste so much better. One of the first appliances…

I purchased was a coffee grinder. I believe I was in college at the time…

…and a good basic grinder cost around or less than $20.

Measure Your Coffee

This is purely a matter of personal preference. However, 1 tbsp…

A good starting point is to add a teaspoon of freshly ground coffee..

…to each cup of water. I like my coffee strong, so I usually…

…add a couple more tablespoons to my french press.

Next step to make french press coffee…

Put Water on to Boil

You don’t need a fancy electric kettle to do the job…

..but they do make it a little easier. A simple pot can be used to boil water…

For brewing coffee, experts recommend that the water…

…be at a specific temperature. My simple trick for knowing…

…when the water is ready is to keep an eye on it and use it just before…

…it reaches a rolling boil. If it comes to a rolling boil…

…remove it from the heat and set it aside for a few minutes…

…before adding it to the coffee.

Add The Water

1 cup of water should be poured over the ground coffee

Allow it to sit for 30 seconds before stirring it…

Then pour in the rest of the water. The amount of time it takes to brew varies…

But only for four minutes. As far as I’m concerned..

..this is ideal brewing time. Then push the plunger all the way down.

Serve The French Press Coffee Immediately

The coffee will continue to brew if you leave it in the french press coffee….

So either pour it into cups right away or keep it warm…

…in an insulated thermos until you need another cup.

And if you want to take it a step further, Add a dash of simple syrup…

…to your cup and top with warm frothed milk.

Tips for French Press Perfection

  • You can make a great cup of coffee by following the steps above. French Presses, however, can leave you with a bitter aftertaste if they are not brewed properly. Here are a few tips to help you avoid bitterness:
  • It all begins with a cup of good coffee. You should buy quality whole bean coffee and grind it just before using it.
  • Over-extraction usually results in bitterness. We recommend you decant the coffee as soon as it’s done brewing to prevent over-extraction.
  • It is also possible for uneven grinding to contribute to bitterness: small pieces of ground coffee (called ‘fines’) extract faster than larger ones. Consider using a burr grinder , if you haven’t done so already, or replacing the burrs on your grinder if they are worn out.
  • Burnt coffee and bitterness can result from boiling water. The ideal temperature is around 200°, which you can achieve by bringing the water to a boil and then letting it sit for a minute.
  • Leaving old coffee in the filter will impart unpleasant bitterness, so we recommend thoroughly cleaning your French Press after each use.

The Pros and Cons of French Press Coffee

A French press makes coffee by steeping the grounds…

…in hot water and then pressing them out.

It is one of the easiest, least time-consuming ways…

…to make a great cup of coffee after the drip coffee maker.

Furthermore, unlike pour overs and Aeropresses…

…it allows you to make coffee for multiple people at the same time.

Because the coffee is sitting directly on the grounds…

…for an extended period of time, it is prone to bitterness and oiliness.

Sum Up

It is hard to imagine being easier to use than a French press for darker roasts…

You don’t have to worry about how long it takes water…

…to flow through the coffee bed. It is as simple as brewing a cup of tea.

Once you know the right water temperature, ratio of liquid to grounds…

…and how long to brew your coffee, you’re well on your…

…way to making French press coffee.
