Is All-Bran Good For You? The Surprising Benefits

Food & Recipes, Blog

For over a century, Kellogg’s has been a part of family meals. Despite its origins in the United States, Kellogg’s All-Bran cereal has become a household staple in the United Kingdom as the ideal on-the-go, yet wholesome breakfast for busy mornings.

Are cereals and ready-to-eat breakfasts such as All-Bran cereal, on the other hand, a healthy source of nutrition?

Although most cereal brands are high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, the higher sugar content raises questions about whether the disadvantages outweigh the benefits.

We looked into Kellogg’s All-Bran cereal to see if it had any nutritional value and if it was actually good for you.

Kellogg’s All-Bran Cereal – Ingredients

While there are several flavoured options on the market, the original Kellogg’s all bran cereal mostly consists of wheat bran (87%) which is the main base for this product. Other primary ingredients include:

  • Barley malt extract
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Vitamins and minerals

Wheat bran is high in fiber and a popular breakfast food because it digests slowly and steadily, allowing you to feel fuller for longer than fast-burning nutrients like carbs.

Kellogg’s all-bran cereal is high in minerals and vitamins like vitamin D, B12, B6, B2, iron, folic acid, and niacin, all of which are important for a healthy immune system and proper nutrition.

Barley malt extract, which is commonly found in cereal meals, is added for sweetness and a fuller flavor.

Other popular cereals in the UK include Golden Crunch and Fibre Crunch Berry Burst, which are more flavorful and contain added ingredients such as dried fruit (raspberry, blueberry, and other berries), flour, and skimmed milk to make the cereal richer and more wholesome.

For those who have a sweet tooth and are looking for unique options, some products, such as Kellogg’s All-Bran cereal Wheat Flakes, contain natural flavoring such as almond milk, honey, and so on.

All-Bran Nutritional Information

Based on the smartlabel estimation of the nutritional composition of the product, the nutritional value of All-Bran will be examined here for a 23 cup (around 41g) of the cereal.

Carbs in All-Bran

Your carb intake for an average all-bran cereal breakfast (around 40g of cereal) is around 32g, which is mostly made up of bran and added sugar for flavor. This is at least 14% of your daily carbohydrate intake, and it’s exactly what your body needs for a kick-start morning meal.

Best Bran Cereal is a ‘’slow” carb, which means it burns slowly and steadily, causing a slow and steady rise in blood sugar levels. Slow carbohydrates, fiber, and protein are an excellent combination for a healthy breakfast, aiding digestion and boosting energy levels in the morning, which are essential for preparing the body for the rest of the day.

How Much Sugar is in All-Bran?

A serving of All-Bran contains approximately 8 grams of sugar (not including milk). Kellogg’s has a high sugar content when compared to similar brands, especially when it comes to flavored editions.

Sugar, unlike bran, is classified as a “fast” carb, which means it burns quickly, causing a rapid rise in blood sugar levels followed by a rapid drop. Have you ever wondered why you get hungry so quickly after eating a filling breakfast? It’s probably because it’s mostly made up of refined sugar and isn’t filling enough for a morning meal.

Fast carbs are not recommended in the morning and should be avoided entirely or combined with more nourishing nutrients such as fiber, protein, and fat.

According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recently published guidelines, an average adult who consumes around 2000 kcal/day should consume between 5 and 10 teaspoons of free sugar (added or found in processed foods) per day to maintain a healthy weight and avoid dental issues. When we convert these figures to the cereal, we find that a typical portion of All-Bran contains around 2 teaspoons of sugar, based on the fact that a standard teaspoon can hold around 4 g of sugar.
