Design: Bulky But Intelligent

We knew we were dealing with a heavy-duty appliance the moment…

…we picked up the Philips Pasta and Noodle Maker’s box.

This pasta machine is big and heavy, weighing in at a little more than 15 pounds.

It fit on the counter without a problem in our average-sized kitchen…

…but it took up a lot of valuable counter space. We don’t think we’ll be able…

…to keep it on the counter due to its size, but it’s far too big to fit…

…in our cupboards or drawers. As a result, individuals with small kitchens…

…may have difficulty fitting this pasta maker in.

We were thrilled to hear that extra dies are available, even though the pasta maker…

…comes with four noodle-shaping discs: spaghetti, fettuccine, penne, and lasagna.

We wish we could have chosen which pasta shapes came with the pasta maker…

…since we could have chosen the ones we’d use the most.

We don’t see us utilizing the lasagna die very often, for example.

One of our favorite features of the design is that the pasta dies…

…and measurement cups may be stored inside the device.

The measurement cups slot into the main unit, while the dies and cleaning equipment…

…are stored in a hidden drawer at the bottom of the machine.

In terms of the control panel, we found it to be simple to read and operate.

There’s a start/pause button and an on/off button. We enjoyed being able…

…to halt the process and change dies because it allowed us to manufacture…

…multiple forms of pasta from a single batch of dough. A serving size button…

Performance: Takes the Mess Out of Pasta-making

Then it was time to get down to business. Using the egg pasta dough…

…recipe contained in the machine’s recipe book, we made numerous batches…

…of fresh pasta. To make white and whole wheat spaghetti, fettuccine…

…and penne noodles, we used King Arthur all-purpose flour…

…and Bob’s Red Mill whole wheat flour. We actually ran out of white flour…

…during one round of pasta, so we improvised and used half white flour…

…and half whole wheat flour instead, and the spaghetti turned out great…

…and properly shaped. Then it was time to get down to business.

Using the egg pasta dough recipe contained in the machine’s recipe book…

…we made numerous batches of fresh pasta. To make white…

…and whole wheat spaghetti, fettuccine, and penne noodles…

…we used King Arthur all-purpose flour and Bob’s Red Mill whole wheat flour.

Pouring the liquid mixture into the little openings on the lid…

… is the most difficult element of utilizing this machine.

We learnt to lightly beat our eggs first, slowly pour in the egg and water mixture…

…and then use our fingers or a little spatula to help thicker portions…

…flow through the openings after making a mess with the first batch.

All we had to do was sit back and watch the machine mix and knead…

…the dough once the liquid had been added to the flour.

Then came the most exciting part: watching the machine extrude noodles…

…and chop them to the length we desired.

The first inch or so of dough extruded out the machine…

…regardless of whatever pasta die we used, appeared a little rough made…

..and we were scared we’d end up with crumbled noodles.

The noodle shape quickly improved from there, generating lovely pasta shapes…

…and the noodles were easy to cut away from the die with the provided tool.

The spaghetti and fettuccine forms were our favorites to utilize.

Using the penne and lasagna dies requires a little more effort…

…but it’s still achievable. Longer noodles require more frequent cutting…

…and lasagna noodles must be uncurled and flattened after cutting.

It takes a little more effort to use the penne and lasagna dies, but it’s still doable.

While the pasta maker does make a noise, we were too engrossed in watching…

…and cutting the noodles to notice! (For comparison, it’s much quieter than

Fresh pasta cooks faster than boxed pasta, which surprised us.

Cleaning: Not Too Bad with a Few Tricks

The mixing arm, the dough tub and lid, the cover, and the pasta dies…

…are just a few of the pieces that need to be cleaned every time…

…this pasta maker is used. Fortunately, they’re all simple to wash by hand…

…and are also dishwasher safe. We elected to hand wash everything…

…since it offered us more control over removing remaining dough…

…from every nook and crevice. The mixing arm, the dough tub and lid….

…the cover, and the pasta dies are just a few of the pieces that need,,,

…to be cleaned every time this pasta maker is used.

Fortunately, they’re all simple to wash by hand and are also dishwasher safe.

We elected to hand wash everything since it offered us more control…

…over removing remaining dough from every nook and crevice.

Any remaining dough will dry up and be much easier to remove…

…and clean if you let the components sit for a few minutes after usage.

Soaking the components in warm, soapy water can also help dislodge…

…any dried-out bits of dough. The plastic covers that come with the spaghetti…

…and fettuccine dies are designed to keep residual dough out of…

…the small extrusion holes. The excess dough came easily out while using these…

…making cleaning the dies much easier. One of our favorite features of the design…

..is that the pasta dies and measurement cups may be stored inside the device.
