If you have a strop, you need to know how to maintaining strops..

Strops work best when combined with abrasive compounds…

…called Stropping Compounds. The company offers several types…

…of Stropping Compounds, including diamond emulsion…

…diamond paste, and diamond spray. A higher number is coarser…

…when comparing micron sizes of Stropping Compounds.

This is the example…

4 microns are coarser than 2 microns. For preventing contamination of Strops…

…always start by washing your hands and using a clean working surface.

If you are interested in getting a leather strop….

..we have the best recommendations for you.

I’m not into the blade and stropping…

until one day I found my grandfather’s blade and strop.

But my grandfather’s stream hasn’t been used in years…

The Preparation of Strops

Apply Diamond Paste to Strops

The strops and syringes of diamond paste should be removed….

…from their packaging. Wicked Edge handles are marked with grit…

…and micron sizes. Handles may be labeled Coarse/Fine in some cases.

A grit number is written on the syringes. If the handles are labeled Coarse/Fine…

…apply the higher numbered Diamond Paste to the side labeled Coarse…

…and the lower numbered Diamond Paste to the side labeled Fine.

By applying a small amount of diamond paste with the syringe…

…the Strop will be cleaned. Apply the paste to the corresponding Strops…

….by rubbing them together. Spread the paste around with your finger…

….and create a thin layer over the entire surface of the strop.

Use only enough compound to coat the strop with a very thin layer…

Approximately 4-6 applications of diamond paste are contained in each syringe….

You only need to apply paste to the Strops approximately…

…every 30-40 knives because the diamond paste will work itself into the Strops.

Here’s a tip for you…

After applying the paste and before rubbing the strops together…

…lightly mist the surface or strop with isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

During stropping, the emulsion will work in more easily and leave less residue…

Apply Diamond Emulsion to Strops

The bottles of diamond emulsion and the strops should be taken…

…out of their packaging. Wicked Edge handles are marked with grit…

…and micron sizes. Handles may be labeled Coarse/Fine in some cases….

Each bottle is labeled with its grit number. When the handles are marked…

…Coarse/Fine, apply the higher numbered Diamond Emulsion to the Coarse side…

…and the lower numbered Diamond Emulsion to the Fine side.

Use a small amount of Diamond Emulsion on the Strop

…(three drops are sufficient) to apply the lower numbered, finer micron size.

Strops should be rubbed together to work the emulsion into them…

Spread the emulsion over the entire surface of the strop with your finger…

…and create a thin layer. Use a small amount of compound to cover the strop…

… just enough to cover it.

Approximately 15 applications are contained in each bottle of emulsion…

It is not necessary to apply emulsion to the Strops every 30-40 knives…

…since the emulsion will work its way into the Strops.

More tip for you…

Lightly mist the surfaces or strops after applying emulsion…

…and before rubbing them together with isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

During stropping, the emulsion will work in more easily and leave less residue…

Apply Diamond Spray to Strops

The strops and diamond spray bottles should be removed from their packaging…

Wicked Edge handles are marked with grit and micron sizes…

The handles of some shovels are labelled Coarse/Fine…

Each bottle is labeled with its grit number. On handles labeled Coarse/Fine..

..apply the higher numbered Diamond Spray to the side labeled Coarse..

…and the lower numbered Diamond Spray to the side labeled Fine.

Spray a small amount of Diamond Spray onto the Strop…

…before applying the finer grit. Work the diamond spray into…

….the corresponding Strops. Using your finger, you can also spread…

…the diamond spray around and create a thin layer over the entire…

…surface of the strop. Use only enough compound…

…to coat the strop with a very thin layer.

Diamond spray contains 50 applications in each bottle…

Diamond spray will find its way into the Strops…

..so you only need to apply it to the Strops approximately every 30-40 knives.

Using the Strops

  • Clean your blade thoroughly before using your strops. Cleaning the blade should be done with caution.
  • Strop your knife using a higher micron size beginning with the coarser micron size. Strike a little more vertically than you would with your stones. When you move the strops horizontally along the edge, the edge of the knife will cut into the strops and ruin them.
  • Strops should never be slid down into the blade, since this will damage the strop.
  • To prevent cross contamination, clean the blade again before switching to a different grit.
  • With the strops, apply light pressure.
  • The strops should “stick” to the blade as you use them. In other words, it means the strops work well.

Another tip

Since leather strops are pliable, it is helpful to lower the sharpening angle…

…by 1-2 degrees when stropping to maintain the original sharpening angle.

If they flex while you’re stropping an edge…

…they won’t roll over the edge and dull it. Here are some references:

  • Standard Leather Strops (cow leather): reduce the sharpening angle by 1-2 degrees
  • Balsa Strops – It should be used at the same angle as stones
  • Kangaroo Leather – Use at the same angle as stones (because kangaroo leather is much thinner than cow leather, and strops with aluminum backing don’t need to be sharpened at a low angle)
  • Nano-Cloth Strops – It should be used at the same angle as stones

More tip for you…

Before stropping, lightly mist the strop with rubbing alcohol…

Your strops will work more effectively when the pores are opened up…

Let’s move on

Maintaining Strops and Care

Before using the strops, always wipe off the steel filings…

…from the blade you have just sharpened.

You can significantly reduce the performance of your strops…

…if you fail to do so, since the steel filings can contaminate them.

A strop with two different compounds of abrasive…

…should never be placed together. Put them in separate plastic bags…

…so they don’t cross-contaminate and keep them in a clean place.

Strop covers from Wicked Edge help prevent contamination of stone…
