Make Perfect Stuffed Hamburger in 7 Easy Steps

From the standard hamburger to a stuffed hamburger, the difference is astounding. It’s even easier than it appears. You can use our Test Kitchen’s tips below to make stuffed hamburger patties. When you master this stuffed burger recipe, you’ll want to make them all the time.


Step 1: A Perfect Meat Mixture for Stuffed Hamburger

Ground beef and some seasonings are the most common ingredients for stuffed burger recipes. There is also often an egg involved-this helps bind the meat so the stuffed hamburgers don’t fall apart during cooking. The basic recipe for stuffed hamburger patties serves four people. Prepare the meat patties by mixing the following ingredients together:

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • ¼ cup chopped onion
  • 2 Tbsp ketchup
  • ½ teaspoon garlic salt ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Then add:

  • 1¼ pounds lean ground beef or turkey.

Mix well, then set this mixture aside.


Step 2: Great Fillings for Stuffed Hamburger

Hamburgers can be stuffed with a variety of ingredients. If you want to make the filling as simple as possible, you can use shredded cheese. Among our favorite cheeses for stuffed hamburgers are mozzarella, blue cheese, feta cheese, and cheddar. About 2 tablespoons are needed. The cheese per burger is one slice.

Other ingredients that can be added to the filling include fresh or dried herbs, spices, chopped olives, green onions, chiles, bell peppers, or dried fruits. 2 Tbsp is about right. Filling per hamburger. To get your creative juices flowing, here are two fantastic fillings for stuffed burgers:

Filling for Stuffed Hamburgers: In a small bowl, combine 14 cups shredded Mexican-style cheese blend, 2 tablespoons. Chop 2 Tbsp. finely, and add it to the tomato. Jalapeo pepper, 2 Tbsp. finely chopped and seeded. Freshly chopped cilantro and 2 Tbsp. Green onions that are thinly sliced.

Several tablespoons of chopped, finely seeded tomatoes, one ounce of crumbled feta cheese, and 1 teaspoon of greek yogurt make a zesty, nourishing Greek filling for stuffed hamburgers. Chop onions finely and add 2 tsp. Sliced olives, roughly chopped, 14 tbsp. 1 1/4 tsp. red wine vinegar. There are 18 tbsp. of olive oil. Oregano that has been dried. Make sure that the mixture is chilled for 30 minutes before using it.


Step 3: How to Right-Size the Meat for Stuffed Hamburgers

In order to make stuffed hamburgers, you need to make sure each patty is just the right size. Make sure your stuffed burger is the right size by following these simple guidelines:

  • Place the meat mixture for your stuffed hamburger patties on a cutting board or work surface. Form the meat mixture into a large, flat rectangle.
  • By making four equal slices of the rectangle crosswise with a knife, score it.
  • Divide the meat lengthwise into eight equal portions.

Step 4: How to Shape Patties for Stuffed Hamburgers

Now that you have eight equal-size squares, shape them into 4-inch patties by lightly pressing each portion with your hands.


Step 5: How to Stuff a Burger

Put two tablespoons on each plate. In the center of each of the four patties, spread the filling to within 12 inches of the edges (be sure to leave a border so the patties can be sealed). Seal edges by pressing together the remaining patties.


Making Stuffed Burgers Using a Burger Press

If you’re going to make stuffed burgers often, a stuffed burger press ($10, Bed Bath & Beyond) might be worth the investment. With these tools, you can easily shape the hamburger patties into exactly the right size and seal the twin patties together; many of these tools even press an indentation into one of the patties so that you can easily fill your stuffed hamburgers. Step 7: How to Cook and Serve Stuffed Hamburgers

Over medium heat, heat a grill pan or a skillet ($18, Walmart) for making stuffed burgers. For beef or turkey burgers, cook for 7 minutes then turn with a wide spatula ($12, Bed Bath & Beyond); cook for 5 to 8 minutes more or until they are done (160°F for beef or 165°F for turkey). Burger buns can be toasted if desired. Served in buns, the stuffed hamburger patties can be topped with complementary toppings and/or condiments as desired.
