Seasoning Wood Salad Bowl

Keeping wood items in optimal condition requires seasoning them before they are used for food preparation or serving. For example, when you first purchase a wooden bowl, season it every day for a week, then once a week for the next three weeks, and then once a month after that. If it appears dull or feels dry to the touch, it needs seasoning.

Shop at the pharmacy or grocery store for a good quality wood preserver or food-quality mineral oil. Cooking oils can turn rancid if they go acrid. Before using a bowl (or board), it should be thoroughly dried out. Give the bowl a liberal coating of mineral oil and let it soak for 5 minutes to several hours. You can use the bowl as usual after wiping off the oil.

Most people are overly cautious about not soaking wood bowls or other wood serving items in water or scrubbing too vigorously with soap and water, fearing they will dry out the wood. Therefore, I have seen many wooden bowls and utensils at flea markets and yard sales that are sticky to the touch; inside or outside (often the reason people are trying to get rid of them).

If it’s a problem with your computer, you can fix it easily. Dish soap and warm water are all you need to clean the bowl or wood item. Using a nylon scrubber sponge, scrub the bowl (or item), rinse thoroughly with hot water, and dry immediately with an absorbent dish towel. If the exterior of the bowl still feels tacky or sticky when dried, scrub the surface again in HOT water and dish soap, then rinse thoroughly with hot water.

If the dried bowl has been air-dried for an hour or two, it may appear a little dried out from the scrubbing. In that case, use some fine steel wool (No. 0000) and Bowl and Board Rub or good quality wood preserver to gently “scrub” the bowl inside and out.

With a clean, soft rag, buff the surface vigorously. To nourish and protect the wood, it’s important to rub a little of the Bowl and Board Rub into the surface. There should be a pleasant glow to the wood after it has been kiln dried. You need to keep buffing if the surface is shiny, greasy/slippery to the touch, or sticky.

Your bowl should last for another 100 years or more if you keep it clean after each use and oil it and buff it occasionally.

Bowls, boards, and utensils made of wood are a great addition to any kitchen. Cleaning and sanitizing these items on occasion helps control the amount of bacteria that can grow on wood, since wood is naturally anti-bacterial. It is true that bacteria die on the surface of wood within seconds because of its porous surface, which robs them of the moisture and warmth needed to survive.

Cleansing Wood Salad Bowl

The best way to care for woodenware is to wash it by hand. If you want to prevent them from splitting or cracking, make sure you don’t soak them too long. It is best to use warm water and mild soap to clean the surface. By doing so, you will clean the wood’s exterior without affecting it with elements that will damage it. Wood products should never be washed or microwaved.

Sanitizing Wood Salad Bowl

To control bacteria growth, one can sanitize wooden bowls and wooden utensils. It is effective to use white vinegar. Combine 1 part white vinegar with 5 parts water, wet the bowl thoroughly, and allow the solution to work for several minutes. Let the bowl air dry after rinsing it with warm water. Fill a spray bottle with a 50-50 mix of white vinegar and water, and spray as needed, wiping off the excess with a clean towel.

Damage Repair

If your wooden bowl feels fuzzy, the grains of the wood are raised and need to be sanded down. Rub the damaged area lightly with 400-600 grit sandpaper or steel wool until it becomes smooth. The bowl should be washed and dried as usual.

The brown-paper bag can even be used in lieu of sandpaper if you don’t have any at hand. Starting with coarser grits will make the dent less noticeable, so move along to finer grits gradually, 80, 100, 120, etc. Once the area is fixed, wash and dry the area as usual. After sanding your bowl, you should season it. In case you need the best salad bowls, we have recommendation for you.
