What Does Blackening Mean?

In order to “blacken” something, you use butter and a blend of spices…

….in a skillet over high heat to impart a rich, unique flavor.

Besides contributing to the signature dark color, butter allows…

…the spices on the outside to crisp up while the inside remains moist.

Blackening originated as a fusion of Cajun and Creole cuisine…

We also have compiled a guide that will help you choose…

…the best seasoning for salmon dishes.

The blackdening rub can be improved by adding some brown sugar…

The fish caramelizes when it hits the heat of the pan….

So, here we go…

How to Cook Blackened Salmon

If you have a decently stocked spice cabinet and a sturdy skillet…

…you’re 99% of the way to making blackened salmon.

The Ingredients

Salmon. In our house, salmon is a favorite healthy ingredient for dinner, and we love this blackened preparation! Omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and potassium are found in salmon.

Blackening Spices. Cayenne pepper, thyme, oregano, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, and salt. BAM! This salmon has an irresistible flavor thanks to a flavorful, lightly spicy combination.

Brown Sugar. Rub with my secret, delicious addition.

Butter. Ensures that the spices are adhered to the salmon pieces and is necessary for the blackening process.

Lemon. A squeeze of lemon juice over salmon is my favorite finishing touch.

The Instructions

  • The salmon fillets should be patted dry and melted butter should be added to the blackening rub.
  • Brush the fillets with butter. Rub the rub mixture over each fillet. I like to sprinkle it on with a spoon, then pat it with my fingers.
  • Place the salmon fillets flesh (spice)-side down in a hot skillet. Cook each piece on the other side.
  • Add lemon juice and enjoy!

Blackened Fish Tips

  • Salmon should be kept cold. The butter will adhere better to cold fish, so keep the salmon in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook it.
  • You should use a hot pan. The pan needs to be extremely hot so the fish will blacken properly and won’t stick. For best results, use a heavy-bottomed, sturdy skillet or cast iron pan.
  • Fish shouldn’t be moved. Don’t move the fish around when you add it to the pan for the first time. Cook it for a few minutes so the butter/spice crust forms.

Some recipes suggest you add oil to the pan, but I don’t think it’s necessary….

By brushing the fish with butter before adding the spices…

Combined with the natural fats in salmon, it is enough to cook it…

If your skillet is nice and hot, you shouldn’t have an issue with sticking…

More Ways to Use Blackened Salmon

If you don’t mind the leftovers, you can use this blackened salmon…

… (or any leftovers) to make other delicious dishes, too. For example:

Salmon tacos blackened. Pile this salmon into tortillas with fresh veggies…

…cheese, and beans, just like I do with my Blackened Zucchini Tacos.

Salmon pasta that has been blackened. Salmon served over pasta…

…would be delicious. You can serve it with either the Pasta al Limone…

…mentioned above or this Quick Garlic Pasta with Olive Oil and…

…Parmesan Blackened Salmon Salad. A salad like this Spinach Strawberry Salad..

…with Balsamic Poppy Seed Dressing would be incomplete…

…without blackened salmon. You can serve leftover salmon cold…

….or at room temperature. Salmon scramble with blackened skin…

Scrambled eggs with leftover salmon are my favorite…

It would make a tasty and hearty meal for any occasion….

Storage and Reheating Tips

For storage. It’s best served the same day it’s made…

…but you can store leftovers for up to one day in the refrigerator.

It is necessary to reheat. Warm the salmon gently over medium-low…

….heat in a skillet to prevent it from drying out.

Any leftovers would be delicious in one of the recipes listed above….

Blackened Salmon Side Dishes

  • Blackberry Farm’s Zucchini Caesar Salad with Cheese Crisps. The dressing is the star of this Genius-approved Caesar salad: a creamy, tangy concoction made with Dijon mustard, fresh lemon juice and zest, sherry vinegar, and fresh herbs. After a five-minute bake time, the show-stopping cheese crisps are ready to serve. In total, this salad takes about 20 minutes to prepare.
  • Tahini Roasted Broccoli. In this four-ingredient tahini roasted broccoli that’s ready in less than 10 minutes, your oven does all the work. Preheating the oven is the most difficult component of this recipe.
  • Grace Young’s Stir-Fried Iceberg Lettuce. This shockingly wonderful salad, another Genius favorite, requires you to do something with lettuce you might think sounds strange: stir-fry it. That burst of heat, on the other hand, brings out the tastes in the sweet and tangy dressing and ensures that each piece of lettuce is thoroughly coated.
  • Sautéed Zucchini With Mint, Basil & Walnuts. According to the reviewers, this no-fuss sautéed zucchini with herbs and crisp walnuts is “excellent.” A generous dollop of ricotta and a basket of crusty bread only enhance the experience.
  • Wilted Escarole with Feta, Walnuts & Honey. The naturally bitter flavor of escarole is mellowed by a brief sear in the pan, while a drizzle of honey, salty feta, and toasty walnuts round off the dish. If you can’t get escarole, romaine lettuce is a good substitute.
  • Shaved Vegetable Salad with Apples & Lemony Tahini Dressing. Beets, carrots, radishes, fennel, apple, and other simple shaved veggies are dressed up in a vibrant lemony dressing with a hint of creamy tahini.

Sum Up

The blackening process involves cooking food at high temperatures…

…after adding blackening spices. The spices are burned…

…resulting in a black crust with smoky flavour on the outside of the food.
