What is Coconut

The coconut palm is a tall tropical evergreen tree native to India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines, New Guinea, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion Island and other tropical areas. The coconut palm produces edible nuts known as coconuts. These can be eaten fresh or dried after removal of their outer husks. This process makes them very resistant to spoilage. Coconut milk is the liquid obtained by boiling the meat and then straining out the solid residue.

This milk is used extensively throughout Southeast Asia. In addition to being an excellent source of protein, it contains many vitamins including thiamin, riboflavin, calcium, phosphorus, iron and copper. Coconut oil is extracted from the flesh of the coconut. It is commonly used in cooking because it has a pleasant taste. It also helps prevent heart disease because the saturated fat in coconut oil does not form plaque. As a moisturizer, it is often applied directly onto dry skin to soothe, soften, smooth and protect. It can even help cure sunburns!

The coconut tree (Cocos nucifera) is a member of the palm tree family (Arecaceae) and the only living species of the genus Cocos.”

How do you grow coconuts?

Coconuts are trees that belong to the genus Cocos. They have fibrous roots and long slender leaves with spiny edges. The fruit looks like a large green or brown ball that grows on top of the tree or shrub. Each fruit usually has one hard end called the “endocarp” and another soft end called the “exocarp”.

Inside the endocarp is the sweet white juice called nectar. It comes from the flower pollen sacs. When the pollen lands on the stigma of a female flower, the pollen tube begins growing into the style.

Once in the style, the pollen tube releases the sperm cells inside itself. The pollen tube continues down through the style until it reaches the ovary and fertilizes the egg cells there. Then, the fertilized eggs start to divide into tiny embryos. After about four months, these embryos become little baby plants. A young coconut will keep growing for up to three years. During this time period, the baby coconut grows new branches off of the mother plant.

Select a Coconut

The secret to collecting coconuts is twisting them off of their branches. The coconut will fall off as long as you keep rotating it. It’s really difficult to merely rip a coconut off with a single, firm tug. Even more so if you’re perched at the top of a swinging tree hundreds of feet above the ground. Randomly, coconuts will fall off on their own, although it’s doubtful that the one you select is ready. Just keep spinning until it hits the ground.

A few individuals are killed each year by falling coconuts. Those who spend a lot of time among coconut trees will become accustomed to the sound of coconuts crashing to the ground at night. The coconut crabs and the climbing rats do the same thing naturally, hoping that they would shatter when they strike.

A victory of patience will ensue if it doesn’t break, so they’ll pick one up and nibble away at it for as long as it takes. Make sure any nuts you discover on the ground still have juice and haven’t been opened by a rodent by shaking and inspecting them carefully. Critters and nuts on the ground seem to be plentiful in most locations.

The next step is to find the nut

You may find coconuts of any shape or size. The outer husk is all that is visible on the tree. Smaller hard spherical nuts are sprouting inside of that one. Nuts vary in location according on the breed. They may be in the middle, at the base of the stem, or at the lower tip. Squeezing it and listening to the liquid splash about will give you a sense of its location. You can even butcher a nut to get the answer. The nut is almost always put in the same spot on every nut in a given area.

Remove Your Shirt to Prevent Stains While Opening It

Let go of your sleeve. Coconut liquid will leave a yellow/brown stain on your clothing. Time-delayed invisible ink, a stain that shows up later, is what it is. Sugar cane sap is another option. Activate your core muscles by contracting them. Playing in the ocean and consuming coconuts are excellent for your health if you live on an island.

To begin, we must make a cut.

The coconut can be stabbed on the side. If the coconut is a young one, this is more easier than it appears. Maybe a little fluid may shoot out of the hole. It appears like the coconut is under strain. For the triangle hole, take two additional stabs. Connect the cuts by rocking the knife. With a sharp stick, you can pierce a hole in something without a knife.

The shell of a ripe nut will be thick and sturdy, preventing your knife from cutting through it. You can stab through it, though, if you have a powerful knife. Coconuts with “monkey-face” holes at the stem end need to be husked and poked through one of the “side-holes” if stabbing the side fails. At the stem of certain husk coconuts you may get a drink by poking the husk open and drinking from it. See how the natives consume their nuts by inspecting the discarded ones.

Removing the plug

Pry the plug out by rocking the knife back and forth to join the incisions.
As a rule of thumb, a $1 pocket knife is not robust enough for such tasks. Typically, a $1 paring knife is. The thicker the blade, the better. It’s common for stainless steel blades to be inferior than their rusty counterparts.

It’s time to slurp it down!

Consume it. Straws can be used if you have one. The alternative is to arch your back and sip it like a commercial. I didn’t enjoy coconut water the first time I tried it. In my opinion, it tasted like pine needles and I couldn’t see why everyone was talking about it. Electrolytes were flushed from my body as a result of perspiration.

Then I drank five or six coconut juices a day because I thought it was the best thing ever. Their electrolytes are said to be in the appropriate proportions. Every day, I also drank a swig of sea water. My arms have healed. The sweetness of certain coconuts is so great that it doesn’t require an acquired taste or nutritional restriction to enjoy them.
