1. Cover a work space with newspaper, ideally outside.
2. Take each canister’s lid off. Cover the canister opening with painter’s tape to keep dust and paint out of the interior and to avoid inadvertent sanding of the canister entrance, which might render it dangerous for food. Trim the tape as required using a craft knife to keep it off everything but the top rim of the canister.
3. Set the canisters and lids on top of the newspaper. Wearing a dust mask, sand the exterior of each canister with fine-grit sandpaper. Sand gently to scuff up the paint and make it more susceptible to a new coat of paint. Repeat with each lid, sanding just the exterior and not the bottom rim or the interior. To eliminate the dust, wipe the canisters and lids with a gentle cloth.
4. On top of the newspaper, place a huge cardboard box on its side. Insert one canister into the spray box.
5. Shake the spray can for a minute or two before painting the canister with gentle, parallel, overlapping strokes while holding the can 12 to 18 inches away. Place the lid on top of the newspaper or inside the box, top side up. Spray the lid in a same manner. Use a paint color that contrasts with the original finish, such as black over white or red.
6. After 15 or 20 minutes, rotate the canister and lid and paint the parts that were missed. Allow the paint to cure for 30 minutes, or as directed on the spray can, before applying a second coat and leaving it to dry.
7. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 to paint the remaining canisters and lids. Allow about an hour or two for all paint to dry.
8. Remove portion of the top paint coat from each canister and lid. If the canisters have textured or embossed elements, pay special attention to those places since the distressing will be more visible. Wipe away the dust using a soft cloth.
