What Is An Espresso

Espresso is a strong concentrated coffee brewed by forcing a small amount of nearly boiling water under pressure through finely ground coffee beans.

In the following article, we will be discussing the history of espresso, the different types of espresso, and espresso drinks.

The first documented use of espresso was in the late 1800s when Italian engineer Gaggia invented an automatic espresso-making device that used steam power to create hot water for brewing.

While it has been around since the early 1900s, espresso machines have become more popular over time.

Most people are familiar with the single cup size, but there are other sizes available as well, including double espressos, triple espressos, quadruple espressos, grande espressos, cappuccino espressos, and latte macchiato.

History Of Espresso

A few years ago, I bought my first espresso maker on Amazon.com, and I knew right away that it was not what I wanted because it was way too complicated.

Even though I did not understand how it worked, I figured out that if you put in a little bit of milk and sugar, then add some shots of espresso, this would make you feel like your having a nice high end coffee drink!

I decided to learn more about it and read up on the history of espresso so I could better understand its origins and why it is such a big deal in the world of coffee.

Here are some interesting facts that you may not know about espresso:

  1. 1) In Italy, the coffeehouse tradition began in the 1600s. At the time, coffee was not widely consumed outside of religious institutions. The tradition of drinking coffee spread from Italy to France, Spain, England, Germany, and eventually the United States.
  2. 2) A typical espresso contains 5 grams of caffeine, while a “regular” cup of coffee contains roughly 100 milligrams of caffeine. This means that a regular cup of coffee is actually only half as powerful as espresso!
  3. 3) During World War II, German engineers were able to reverse engineer a Gaggia espresso machine (the one you see pictured above). Once they got their hands on these machines, they were able to produce their own version of espresso at much lower costs, which made them very popular in post war Europe.
  4. 4) When you hear a barista say something like “This is a caffè Americano,” they are referring to a double shot of espresso topped off with steamed milk. If they said “Cappuccino” they would mean a double shot of espresso filled with steamed milk.
  5. 5) There were originally no rules written down or laws making certain coffees illegal. It wasn’t until 1964 when the U.S. passed the Espresso Coffee Act that any type of coffee served in a cafe had to contain less than 25% alcohol by volume and be prepared with a specific process.

What Is A Espresso Machine

An espresso machine is an appliance that prepares espresso coffee by forcing pressurized hot water through finely ground coffee beans.

Espresso machines are used to make espresso, cappuccino, and other coffee drinks. The idea of an espresso machine might seem like a relatively modern invention, but the first patent for an espresso machine was filed in 1884 by Angelo Moriondo.

Why Espresso Machine Expensive

There are many reasons why espresso machines are expensive. Here are the reasons why espresso machine so expensive:

  • Making a great quality espresso takes skill and experience. You need to be able to grind the beans correctly, brew the perfect amount of pressure in the portafilter basket, and extract the best flavors into the espresso itself. These are all skills that take practice and experience to master.
  • Most espresso makers are handmade and built by artisans. They want the machines to look unique and beautiful; therefore spending money on materials can go a long way.
  • Some of the technology found in espresso machines can cost thousands of dollars. For example, a dual boiler system uses two pots instead of just one pot like most home espresso machines. However, they provide superior heat control and greater consistency in the temperature of the water being brought to the steam wand.
  • Finally, the people who consume the espresso also play a role in its price tag. Many customers will expect the drinks served at cafes to be really good. With this expectation, people often demand for higher quality equipment. Also, because bars tend to serve food, they require extra space to store equipment that serves both functions. So even though they serve great coffee, they might use larger quantities of milk, sugar, or other ingredients that result in an overall more expensive product.

So there we have it. Now that you know what makes an espresso machine so expensive, why don’t you give it a try?
