It’s crucial to understand what pieces make up the vertical charcoal smoker before we go over these stages and how to smoke meat. It usually has three sections: a lid, a middle section, and a base section. The magic happens in the middle area, which is also where you put your food. The fuel is added through the base part, and the unit is covered by the lid.

Now for the steps.

Step 1: Clean the Unit

The first step is to clean the smoker by scraping off any gunk, filth, or residue that has gathered on the device. This is especially true for smokers who use charcoal. These may fall onto the food if not removed during the smoking process. Clean the lid, sides, and hinges of your smoker with extra care.

Step 2: Light Up the Smoker

Use a blowtorch or a chimney to add fuel, depending on your desire. Depending on the design of the smoker, you can use wood, charcoal, or gas.

Allow 20 minutes before transferring the fuel to the unit’s base. By this time, the fuel should be very hot. Just make sure it’s not extremely burning, as this will cause the wood to burn too quickly. After that, you can add more wood.

Step 3: Add Water to the Bowl

Removable bowls are positioned in the middle of vertical smokers. Fill this bowl with water and place it securely inside the smoker. Spices can be added to the water to improve the flavor and scent of your meat.

Step 4: Add the Food

Place your meal or meat on the grill in the middle of the table.  In case you are looking for best charcoal smoker, we have some recommendation you can check

Step 5: Extra Charcoal

This step isn’t required. However, some folks like to add more wood or charcoal to the smoker’s base at this point.

Step 6: Reassamble the Smoker

Here you reassemble the smoker by attaching the base to the middle section.

Step 7: Monitor Heat

Allow the food to cook on its own. The amount of time it takes will be determined on the type of food you’re cooking as well as the type of fuel you’re using. Using the external thermostat on your smoker, check the temperature every now and then. In around 90 minutes, your supper will be ready.

Handy Cooking Tips

While the following stages appear to be simple enough, if they are not followed correctly, a lot can go wrong throughout the smoking process. We’ll provide you with a few pointers that you can use to help guide you in the correct way.

Do’s

If you want to get the best outcomes when smoking, do the following:

  • Make use of wet wood. This permits the fire to burn more slowly and steadily. It also eliminates the inconvenience of having to replenish your smoker on a regular basis.
  • Soak your wood in water for at least 30 minutes before draining it. Make sure the wood isn’t too wet or too dry before using it. Being too moist may put out the fire, whilst being too dry can cause the wood to burn quickly.
  • When placing your smoking meat into the smoker, leave some room between each piece. This enables for easy infusion of hot air and smoke into your meat.
  • When reassembling the item, wear gloves to avoid finger burns.
  • If you want to increase the flavor of your meat, feel free to add more spices.

Don’ts

At all costs, stay away from the following:

  • Make sure the bowl isn’t overflowing. After filling the bowl with water, you’ll still need to attach the mid-section of your smoker to the base. Water should not be spilled on the hot wood.
  • When placing your meat on the grill, try to keep it away from the sides of the smoker. Dirt or debris from the sides of the pan could end up on your meat.
  • When smoking, don’t remove the lid because it will interfere with the cooking process.
