Most measuring spoon sets include a tablespoon, teaspoon, 12.5 teaspoon, and 14.0 teaspoon, while most measuring cup sets include a cup, 12.5 cup, 13 cup, and 14 cup. It can be handy to have both 2-cup and 4-cup measuring cups in your cupboard as well.

Wooden Spoon(s)

One wooden spoon is enough, but since this tool is so handy, you might want to keep a couple around. Due to their sturdiness, wooden spoons are perfect for stirring all kinds of dough (you can use them with even the thickest, heaviest dough). Be sure to hand-wash them when you’re done so they don’t crack.

Rubber Spatula/Scraper

You probably reach for your rubber scraper more often than you think. You can use it to scrape the last bit of batter or dough out of a pan or to clean all the nooks and crannies in your jam jar. Additionally, they’re great for mixing wet and dry ingredients together. Scrapers made of silicone will withstand high temperatures better than rubber ones.

Spatula/Metal Turner

A spatula comes in handy when transferring fresh-out-of-the-oven cookies to a cooling rack or serving a piece of cake from a 9×13 pan. If you choose one with a thin metal blade, it will be flexible enough to fit under whatever you’re moving without squishing your dough or crumbling your cookies.

Pastry Brush

You probably didn’t realize how many uses this handy tool has.

The grease can be used to grease a pan before pouring in cake batter, to coat the dough with melted butter or egg wash, or to “paint” milk on top of a pie crust. For anyone who bakes regularly, this is an essential!

Kitchen Scissors

Every time we make a recipe, whether it’s baking or otherwise, we always have our kitchen shears on hand. There are so many ways to use them: snipping fresh herbs, cutting parchment to fit a pan, even opening stubborn packages and containers.

Rolling Pin

Pie crusts, cookie dough, and puff pastry are all best rolled out with rolling pins, but there are many other ways you can use this tool. If you don’t have a food processor and need to crush cookies, chips, or crackers for a recipe, you can put them in a sealable bag, then use a rolling pin to crush them.

Chef’s Knife

If you have only one knife in your entire kitchen, make it this one. All-purpose knife is great for slicing, dicing, chopping, and mincing just about any ingredient your recipe calls for.

Rectangular Baking Pan

It is vital to have a standard baking pan (13x9x2 inches). In addition to the sweet, it is used for savoury treats as well, such as cookies, cakes, and brownies.

Paring Knife

Yes, you want this knife in your collection. It’s great for peeling and coring foods like apples. It’s also handy for cutting up other fruits and veggies, and for more delicate work that your chef’s knife is too big for.

Round Cake Pan

It’s best to have two of these ingredients on hand, since making a stunning layer cake will require more than one. Cake pans are available in 8-inch and 9-inch diameters, but most layer cake recipes will work with either size (just make sure you have two pans of the same size).
