Garlic Naan Grilled Cheese Recipe
Ingredients of Garlic Naan Grilled Cheese
- 2 tablespoons salted butter, at room temperature
- 1 clove garlic, grated
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs – such as parsley, cilantro, chives, and/or dill
- 2 pieces naan, homemade or store-bought
- 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded havarti or fontina cheese
- honey, for serving
- crushed red pepper, flakes for serving
Instructions of Garlic Naan Grilled Cheese
- In a small bowl, mix together the butter, garlic, and herbs, 2. Spread one side of each piece of naan with garlic butter. Flip the naan over and layer the cheese on one half of the naan. Fold the other half of the naan over the cheese (like a taco). Repeat with the second piece of naan.3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Place the naan (the buttered sides should be on the outside), one at a time, in the skillet and cook until golden on each side, about 3-4 minutes per side. Serve topped with honey, chili flakes, and sea salt, if desired. Enjoy!
Next thing to note…
Freezing the Naan Grilled Cheese
Is it possible to make these garlic naan ahead of time and freeze them?
Yes, you certainly can!
Make the dough and let it rise before freezing….
The dough is then divided into equal portions and rolled out….
Place a sheet of parchment paper on top, followed with a rolled naan…
Place a sheet of parchment paper on top of the rolled naan…
…then another naan on top of that.
Stack them one by one, with a sheet of parchment paper between each naan…
After stacking them all, place them in a freezer bag…
…and push out as much air as possible before freezing.
Making Naan Grilled Cheese Method
- Combine 3.25 cups all-purpose flour (423 grams) and 1 teaspoon salt in a mixing basin. Remove it from the equation.
- Pour lukewarm water into the steel bowl of your stand mixer, then add the sugar and yeast. Allow 5-10 minutes for it to flourish.
- When the top of the mixture becomes bubbly and foamy, the yeast has been activated.
- Stir in the lukewarm milk, yogurt, and oil once the yeast has been activated.
- Stir in the flour mixture until everything is well blended.
- Add the grated garlic as well. Begin to add the last 3-4 tablespoons of flour (27-36 grams). 1 tablespoon at a time, if the flour is too sticky, add more.
- At this point, I added around 3-4 tablespoons flour. If you want the dough to be dry, don’t add any additional flour. It simply shouldn’t be sticky.
- Knead the dough for 1-2 minutes with your hands or the dough hook attachment on your stand mixer until smooth. Place the dough in a greased mixing basin.
- Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let the dough rise for 60-90 minutes in a warm area. Pre-heat your oven for a few minutes if it’s chilly where you live, then turn it off. Then, with the oven turned off, lay the dough inside the oven. 10- The dough will have more than doubled in bulk after around 90 minutes. To release the air, lightly punch the dough.
- Cut the dough into eight equal pieces (around 100-105 grams each). Because the dough will be sticky, grease your hands before splitting it. Allow the dough balls to rest for 10-15 minutes after covering them with a kitchen towel.
- In the meantime, melt 3 tablespoons butter and stir in minced garlic and chopped cilantro. Garlic butter should be kept.
- In a medium-high heat, heat an iron skillet. To create these naan, I highly recommend using an iron skillet. Make an oval form out of a dough ball, about 10 to 11 inches long and 6 inches broad. Before you try to roll the dough, brush it with a little oil. Also, lubricate your roller. Do not attempt to roll the dough like a tortilla, roti, or paratha. Simply stretch it both in length and width.
- After dipping your finger in water, sprinkle nigella seeds on top. This is an optional step.
- Carefully place the rolled naan in the hot skillet. Allow it to cook for a few minutes, or until bubbles appear on the surface. At this stage, brush the naan with the garlic butter that has been prepared.
- Remove the naan from the skillet with a tong, flip, and place directly on the burner. There will be a small splatter as the butter drips down – don’t worry, it’ll be OK.
- Before you start cooking the naan, you can cover your burner with aluminum foil if you prefer.
- You can alternatively skip this step and apply butter after the naan has been cooked. I prefer to use it twice to get a stronger garlic flavor.
- Cook the garlic naan for 15-20 seconds (directly on gas) on both sides till golden brown.
To Cook Garlic Naan Grilled Cheese in Oven
To make the garlic naan in the oven, preheat the oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit…
Place the rolled naan on a baking sheet and bake for 4-5 minutes…
…or until golden brown. Remove the naan from the oven…
…and spread the garlic butter on top. If you wish…
…you can sear the naan by placing it in the broiler in the oven.
