How to fix overflowing dishwasher

  • Step 1 on how to fix overflowing dishwasher is to locate the float switch by opening the dishwasher door. It should be a cylinder-shaped piece of plastic that is put to one side along the front of the cabinet or at the sprayer head in the machine’s center.
  • Step 2. Verify that the float slides easily up and down its shaft. (To access the float, you may need to unscrew and remove a protective cap.) If the float becomes stuck, wipe away any debris or mineral deposits that may be clogging it.
  • Step 3. Remove the float from the shaft and use a bottle brush to clean the inside of the float. Scrub the shaft well with a scrub brush.

  • Step 5. Set the dishwasher to fill and monitor it to ensure it does not overflow. If the float switch continues to malfunction, it must be replaced.
  • Step 6. Disconnect the dishwasher from the power source by disconnecting it or turning off the circuit breaker.

  • Step 8. Determine the location of the float switch. Wrap each wire with masking tape and identify each one to ensure proper reinstallation on the new switch. Then, using needle-nose pliers, remove the wires.
  • Step 9. Remove the old switch by loosening the bolts using a screwdriver or nut driver and socket.
