A coffee maker is an electric countertop appliance that brews hot coffee automatically. The typical coffee makers are made of stainless steel and plastic, but they can also be glass or ceramic. Coffee makers vary in size from small carafe models just a few cups to large commercial-style machines capable of producing several gallons at once. Some coffee makers have two thermostats: one for the heating element and another for the brewing unit itself.
A coffee maker is a very simple, low-tech machine that is extremely efficient. At the bottom of the maker, a heating element surrounds the hot plate. A hollow metal tube is wrapped around this heating element.
When the reservoir is filled with water, a small opening in the bottom of the container feeds a plastic hose that runs down to one end of the metal tube. Once the coffee pot is turned on, the heating element instantly heats up. Sensors switch the element on and off to maintain the temperature between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit (90-96 Celsius).
The water inside the aluminum tube boils, and the turbulence causes bubbles to climb to the opposite end of the tube, where they travel up an escape hose (making room for more water to enter the heating element). A little stream of boiling water is carried to the top of the coffee maker by hot water riding on these rising bubbles.
The exit pipe is terminated here on a drip plate. The drip plate properly distributes the boiling water to the filter basket’s coffee grinds. As a result, the drip coffee maker continuously fills the carafe with freshly made coffee. Cleaning your coffee machine requires time and effort, but is well worth the effort.
Finally, it’s reassuring to know that there are numerous ways to clean your coffee maker of mineral residue. You and your loved ones do not have to put up with unappealing coffee. If you love espresso, we have tips for picking coffee beans for espresso that you might want to read about it.
