What Is Masticating Juicers?
So, what is masticating juicers? A masticating or a twin-screw extruder…
…is an auger that works by rotating the feed material through two parallel screws. The rotation of these screws forces food into small holes and creates friction, which helps break down fibres in the food. This process is called mastication because it mimics what we do when we chew our food.
Mastication breaks down tough fibrous materials such as carrots, celery, apples, pears and other vegetables to make them easier for your body to digest. It also makes juice more soluble so you can drink more with less added sugar.
Masticating Juicer
This machines are one of the most popular types in today’s market. These machines do not use a single auger to crush and mix ingredients but rather they have two or more rotating cutting blades, which cut up food into small pieces with each rotation. The juice passes through these blades as it flows down from the top of the machine to the bottom where it collects for later extraction. Masticating juicing machines can be used on all kinds of fruit such as apples, pears, oranges, grapefruits etc. In here we also have recommendation for best masticating juicers, that you might want to see.
Masticating Juicer vs Other Juicer
The main difference between a masticating juicer and other juicers is its ability to extract maximum nutrients out of fruits and vegetable while making sure there isn’t too much pulp left behind. Unlike centrifugal juicers, this type of juicer does not separate liquid and solid parts when extracting juices; instead, it extracts both at once leaving no waste.
Benefits Of Using Masticating Juicer:
There are many benefits of using a masticating juicing machine over other types of juicers. Some of them include:
- No need for straining – As mentioned above, masticating juiceries don’t separate liquids and solids like centrifugal ones. So, unlike centrifugal juicers, masticating juiciers automatically remove every part of the food without any effort required by users.
- Better nutrition – Since masticating juicies work by breaking down foods before extracting their juice, they ensure better digestion and absorption of vitamins and minerals. They help reduce bloating and gas problems caused due to poor digestive system. Also, since they don’t require straining, people who suffer from constipation will find it easy to consume enough fibre rich drinks.
- Easy cleaning – Since there’s minimal separation of liquids and solids during processing, you won’t find clogged filters or sedimentary buildup in the machine.
How Does Mastication Work?
Imagine if you could put all those ingredients on a conveyor belt and have them travel through a machine where they were ground up together, mixed and then pressed out like toothpaste from a tube. That’s how mastication works.
There are three main types of masticators available centrifugal, single screw and twin screw models. All work well but each one has its own benefits and drawbacks
Centrifugal model
This type of juicer uses powerful magnets to create high speeds to spin the blades at around 50 RPM. These fast spinning blades chop the fruit/vegetable mixture quickly and efficiently. However, this method does not allow juices to pass easily through the machine so some liquid may remain trapped inside. Centrifugal juicers tend to produce higher quality juice than others but require frequent cleaning due to their speed.
Single Screw Model
The second type of masticating juicer is the single screw model. In this design there is only one blade attached to the shaft instead of multiple ones. As the shaft rotates, the blade chops up the vegetable or fruit mixture. Single screw juicers usually operate between 40 – 60 RPM depending on the size of the unit. Because of their slower speed, single screw units don’t need much space and therefore are smaller than centrifugal juicers. But they lack power compared to the former and will take longer to blend the ingredients.
Twin Screw Models
Finally, the third kind of masticating juicing machine is the twin screw model. Twin screw juicers consist of two independent helical threads running side by side. Each thread contains many tiny slots that hold the food being processed. When the first flight reaches the end of the first spiral, it turns 90 degrees and falls back onto the next flight. After falling off the first flight, the new flight travels along until it comes back to the beginning of the first spiral again. This continues over and over until every inch of the food is chopped up.
