Kitchen Faucet
The faucet is one of the most often used items in the kitchen. It is necessary for daily tasks such as meal preparation, cooking, cleaning, and sanitizing. Among all the components in your kitchen, the faucet is arguably the most frequently used.
Standing at center stage, the faucet is also one of the primary features of your kitchen’s style. Choosing the right fixture will not only enhance the functionality of the kitchen, but also serves as an expression of your individual taste. There are many different styles of faucets to choose from. Some faucets have pull-out sprayers or even handheld sprayers built into them. Others feature levers to turn on and off. The type of faucets available today can be very varied. There are single handle models, spigots, wall mounted fixtures, and more.
How To Do It
Painting an outdated kitchen faucet is a great way to update your kitchen without spending hundreds of dollars. If done correctly (and patiently, might I add), the results are actually quite worth it. However, executing the job incorrectly can cost you a lot of time, money, and effort so it is important to get it right the first time. To make it easier for you, I’ve broken down the entire process into 8 simple steps:
Prepare the Materials
It’s critical to have all necessary resources on hand before beginning the project. To spray paint your kitchen faucet, you’ll need the following supplies:
- Screwdriver (optional)
- Sandpaper with a grit of 230
- Stainless steel wool
- A moist cloth
- Tape for painting
- Brown paper tarpaulin or plastic tarpaulin
- A primer or a basecoat
- Your choice of spray paint
- Topcoat or lacquer (optional)
Painting is a difficult task — you must wait specified intervals of time between layers of paint. You don’t want to be scrambling to locate a supply just as your faucet is about to receive its second coat of paint!
Disconnect Your Kitchen Faucet’s Handles
Although it is optional, detaching the handles from the faucet simplifies the work significantly. Simply take a screwdriver to the handles and unscrew them. The goal of this step is to disassemble the faucet in order to make cleaning and painting the individual components easier.
Sand the to-be-painted surfaces
Sand the finish of all components carefully with 220-grit sandpaper. Before you sand any part, ensure that it is clean and dry. Sanding removes any existing gloss from the metal, allowing the paint to penetrate deeply. Sand all sides and corners well to ensure that the paint penetrates evenly and the final appearance is seamless.
Thoroughly Clean the Surface
After sanding the surface thoroughly, it’s time to adequately clean it. This means that dusting it off will not suffice. I propose using steel wool followed by a damp cloth to thoroughly clean the surface and prepare it for priming.
Protect the Surrounding Areas by Covering Them
This step may require more time, but it must be done properly or you risk painting more than just your faucet (believe me, scraping paint off of your sink and countertop is not fun). Therefore, how can we ensure that everything remains clean?
Cover adjacent spaces entirely with a plastic tarp or brown paper covering and painter’s tape. Cover at least 12 inches on all edges of the painted surface. Bear in mind that you’ll also be painting the plug and metal drain at the bottom of the sink, which means you’ll likely need to tape the entire sink.
Priming the Surface and Allowing it to Dry
Finally, after prepping your faucet and the space surrounding it, it’s time to apply the first layer: the primer. Many individuals omit this step and proceed directly to painting. While the results are identical at the time, primed surfaces retain paint better than unprimed surfaces over time. A spray paint is only as effective as the priming over which it is sprayed! Because you’re painting metal, it’s a good idea to use vehicle paint as a primer. Each brand has its own set of instructions that you must adhere to as strictly as possible. Allow the primer to dry for the required amount of time before beginning to paint.
Evenly Spray the Surface
It’s time to paint once the priming is totally dry! You may use any metallic spray paint. Typically, 2-3 coats of paint are sufficient. Ensure that the first layer of paint has completely dried before applying a second coat. To avoid splotches or drips, maintain the spray approximately a foot away from the faucet surface and use a sweeping motion with your hand. If this is your first time, it is acceptable to apply numerous light coats for a finer finish rather than 2-3 heavy applications.
Add a Top Coat for Added Gloss
By this point, your faucet should have been successfully painted, and if you’re completely satisfied with the results, you may skip this step. If not, a top coat of a glossy lacquer is a wonderful approach to achieve a flawless, glossy finish and to protect your hard work.
Bear in mind that this is not the time for impatience. Allow each application to dry completely before adding another. And for nearly a week after you’ve completed the final coat, refrain from using the faucet! Believe me, you do not want a single mark against all your hard work at this point. Finally, you’re finished! After a week, your sink will be ready to use on a daily basis.
