English Breakfast Tea vs Irish Breakfast Tea

Black tea mixes are used in both English and Irish breakfast teas….

Chinese Keemun tea was originally used to make English breakfast tea….

Later, Assam and other strong black teas became…

…the most popular tea basis for an English Breakfast.

Before India began manufacturing teas, England had a tea culture….

Breakfast mixes later included several types of tea, especially Assam…

…and cheaper broken leaf that was better served with milk…

…and sugar as tea became more widely available and affordable.

They can now consist of nearly any sort of strong black tea…

…as long as it is full-bodied and robust.

Tea culture, on the other hand, began in Ireland later in the 18th century….

Assam tea was available at the time, but it was only for the elite classes….

A significant Assam component is nearly always present in Irish breakfast…

…as well as a powerful and robust flavor typical of morning blends.

In fact, Assam may be the only tea used in some Irish Breakfast teas….

Irish breakfast tea, unlike Irish coffee, does not contain alcohol…

…and does not have a whiskey flavor. The strength of these two breakfast blends..

…is the key difference. Although Irish Breakfast tea is typically stronger…

…than English Breakfast tea, this isn’t always the case.

Many English Breakfast blends now comprise at least two…

…and in some cases four or more, distinct teas. Irish Breakfast, on the other hand…

…is more likely to include two, with the stronger one always taking precedence.
