OXO Potato Ricer Review 2018 A potato ricer is similar to a ricer, though it is adjustable so it can pulverize potatoes, gnocchi, applesauce, and baby food. Looking for the best potato ricer? we have a recommendation for you.
Uses for a Oxo Potato Ricer
The potato ricer functions similarly to a food mill. The machine is designed to crush and grind chunks and pieces of food that are larger and bulkier into small pieces. The end result will depend on the size of the holes of the ricer and the consistency of the food. You will either get mashed potatoes that are smooth and creamy, or applesauce or baby food that is more liquid in consistency. A ricer also separates the seeds from the food, so if you’re making tomato sauce, it will be seed-free. Its adjustable head is one of the coolest and most useful features of this ricer. Using the dial, you can choose between three different settings–coarse, medium, or fine.
Caring and Cleaning the OXO Potato Ricer
Okay. We all know that high-quality kitchen tools should not be put in the dishwasher. The banging back and forth can sometimes damage sharp edges in such a harsh environment. That said, most of us have better things to do than to hand wash everything, so anything that can go through the dishwasher is a godsend. Despite running my unit through the dishwasher for about a year now, it hasn’t suffered any damage.
However, to properly clean it, you need to open the unit all the way up, so it does take up quite a bit of room in the top rack of your dishwasher. Furthermore, you will have to remove the adjustable head to remove any food particles trapped between the disks. The markings must line up and the part must be jostled a little to come apart. Although removing the head proves to be more challenging than it should be, eventually you’ll get it.
Pros of the OXO Potato Ricer
The high-quality construction and adjustable settings are two of the best features of this kitchen gadget. I cannot imagine it breaking unless you drop it from a second-story window onto a concrete sidewalk. That’s how tough it is. Despite its strength, it is lightweight, easy to maneuver, and convenient to use. It also has a hook at the end, which is a fantastic feature. When you want to load the hopper with really hot or really wet food, you can rest the unit over a pot or large bowl, which is a great feature that keeps your hands free.
Cons of the OXO Potato Ricer
Although the OXO Potato Ricer has many good points, it also has a few negative features. In my previous post, I mentioned that the disks can be tricky to use, but that’s more of an annoyance than anything else. One of the biggest drawbacks of the unit is its small food hopper. A little more than three and a half inches wide. There’s a lot of potatoes to make when you’re making mashed potatoes for a hungry, angry mob … I mean cherished family members. It will take quite a few squeezes to get through all of the potatoes when the potato ricer is limited to 1 12 potatoes per squeeze.
On some other websites you’ll see people complaining that the disks pop out when they crush food items. It’s unlikely that you will ever achieve that if you use it properly. It must be twisted and locked in place in order to function properly; pushing the disk out would require you to be the Hulk. It is more likely that some people are irritated by the tricky way you have to take the disk on and off to clean it, and decide not to use it anymore. The lock disk prevents the unit from being pushed apart if you don’t use it; otherwise the disk is likely to separate.
