How to Clean a Manual Can Opener
Here are the materials for cleaning a can opener:
- Mason jar or comparable container that is tall and narrow
- vinegar distilled in white
- A worn-out toothbrush
- Soap for dishes
- Towel
Instructions
- Soak it: Place your can opener in the Mason jar, gears down, and pour enough vinegar to completely cover the functioning components. (I discovered that using the Mason jar used less vinegar than if I had combined everything in a dish)
- Allow it to sit: Allow at least a few minutes (or hours, if your can opener is really bad). You should see some pleasing bubbles emerging from the gears, as well as some muck floating to the bottom of the jar. (Full disclosure: I waited around two minutes and had satisfactory results)
- Bring the jar over to the sink and scrub. Remove the can opener from the jar, soak the toothbrush in the vinegar, then use the toothbrush to scrape the gears. When the toothbrush gets brown, rinse it well and soak it in the vinegar. Rep until the toothbrush seems to be completely clean!
- Add soap: Fill your toothbrush halfway with dish soap.
- Scrub one more: Using your soapy toothbrush, scrub everything again, then rise. (I discovered that this eliminated any residual oily particles.)
- Let it dry: Dry the metal gears with a dish towel (otherwise they may rust!) and take pride in your like-new can opener!
