What Is the Distinction Between a Panini Press and a Panini Grill?

What is panini press? What’s the difference with panini grill? Although these two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, there is a technical difference between them.

Panini Grill: also known as a sandwich grill, presses and cooks food using its own heat source. This sandwich maker is suited for a variety of purposes, most notably routine sandwich production.

Panini Press: A sandwich press (sometimes referred to as a sandwich weight or a grill press) keeps a sandwich together and “presses” it while another piece of equipment warms it. This kind of press is great for cooking the occasional panini or grilled sandwich on a griddle or frying pan.

Step 1: Install Your Panini Press

First and foremost, ensure sure your panini press is clean. Cleaning it with a clean dishcloth will suffice.

Then connect it into an outlet to get it to function. Depending on the model, you may need to adjust the temperature of your cooking plates. If this is the case, simply choose whatever medium-high temperature your model supports. It should be in the 350oF range.


Step 2: Apply Oil To The Griddles

The second step is to brush some oil on the panini press’s cooking surface. This, I’ve discovered, helps your food not burn to the plates or become stuck. Of course, if your model features nonstick plates, this step is entirely up to you. However, you will most likely discover that the additional oil browns your panini sandwich nicely.

If you choose to do this, pour some olive oil onto a paper towel or reusable towel and wipe it all over the griddles, both top and bottom. Coating the griddles with cooking spray is a less messy option.


Step 3: Allow It To Pre-heat

Close the lid of your panini press and allow the cooking plates to heat up. This will crisp up your bread, which will contrast nicely with the warm and soft contents.

Most current panini presses include a built-in indication light that glows green when the plates are sufficiently heated.

It’s fine if yours does not have this indication light. The griddles should heat up in five to seven minutes. You may also sprinkle a few drops of water on the plates; if it soon turns to steam, you know they’re hot and ready to cook.


Step 4: Combine Your Panini!

Now comes the fun part: putting your panini together. Use the time it takes your panini maker to heat up to begin gathering all of the ingredients and assembling them.

First, select your preferred sandwich bread. Then choose your protein, vegetables, and seasonings or sauce. The possibilities are truly limitless. You may experiment with any taste combination you can think of (and I bet it will be delicious). Just keep any wet components (tomato, for example) in the sandwich’s center layers so the wetness doesn’t flood the bread.

For example, two slices of sourdough bread with two portions of chicken breast, tomato slices, and fat slices of fresh mozzarella cheese might be used. If you want to make this sandwich even better, add a dab of pesto on top. Panini with grilled cheese and chicken, anyone? 


Step 5: Allow It To Cook

Close the cover after your panini has been placed on the cooking griddles. Make sure you’re pressing down on the sandwich—this is a panini press, after all.

Most panini presses have a clasp to assist you keep the lid closed. This will result in the typical grill marks appearing on both pieces of bread.

Cooking time for your panini should be between 5 and 7 minutes. You may check in on the development on a regular basis. Ideally, the bread should be uniformly toasted and the cheese (if using) melted.
