While over-the-range microwave hoods should fit snugly between the range and the cabinets, canopy hoods can either be put snugly or with a couple inches of space on either side before the range.

Measure the distance from the cooking surface to the ceiling.

Cooking surfaces and hoods should be separated by at least an inch. You should check your kitchen appliance’s installation height with the manufacturer and local building codes. For your convenience, we’ve included some standard clearances:

  • Electric cooktops and ranges should have a minimum width of 24 inches.
  • A gas cooktop or range must be at least 27 inches wide.
  • For both gas and electric cooktops, the maximum cooking surface width should be 36 inches.

The precise distance from the cooking surface should be maintained even if the hood is not flush with the cabinet bottom when installed beneath a cabinet. For downdraft hoods that retract, ensure sure there’s enough room above the range for the vent to fully stretch.

Find out how deep your cooktop

Do not include the control panel or trim when measuring the cooktop from front to rear. The front and back burners need to be covered by the vent hood, which should be deep enough to do so. Custom or specialized range hoods may be needed for commercial and large ranges. Make sure the cabinet below the downdraft vent is at least 24 inches deep before installing it.
